Burnaby Lakes falls below .500 with loss to T-Birds in premier men's rugby

The Burnaby Lake Rugby Club had two tries called back in a 36-8 loss to the University of British Columbia in B.C. premier division spring rugby union action last weekend. The loss dropped the Lakers record to 3-4-1.

The Division 1 Burnaby Lake squad improved its record to 7-1-0 after blanking the UBC Braves 23-0.

Ninth nets game winner

Burnaby defenceman Joey LaLeggia scored the game-winning goal for the University of Denver in a 3-2 victory over No. 7-ranked Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 30.

The Hobey Baker award candidate scored his ninth goal of the year on a feed from teammate Trevor Moore in the second period.

The win helped Denver move up in the national rankings and into 10th spot in USA Hockey magazine poll and to ninth on the NCAA PairWise chart.

Shutout ousts East Coast leader

Junior goalie Kimberly Newell stopped 32 shots to shut out Harvard 1-0 in a weekend women’s Ivy League hockey game.

The win knocked Harvard out of first place in East Coast hockey action and moved the sixth-place Tigers to within three points of securing a home ice playoff series.

Penalty puts car on podium

VisitFlorida.com Racing sports car driver Michael Valiante was moved up to third place at the 53rd annual Rolex 24 at Daytona last week.

Valiante and co-driver Richard Westbrook finished six laps behind the podium finishers in the team’s Corvette Daytona prototype in the second race of the Tudor United Sportscar championship season, but a drive-time penalty to the Wayne Taylor Racing team dropped the third-place finishers to last place in the prototype class.

Remo Ruscitti, who helped co-drive for Bar1 Motorsports in the prototype challenge class, had their 10th-place car also similarly penalized.
