Twenty-eight Burnaby Haida speed skaters raced in the club’s mini-meet at Kensington Arena earlier this month, with plenty to show for their efforts.
In a meet that attracted skaters from the Vancouver Speed Skating Club and Langley Blades, a number of club records were established.
Burnaby’s Hana Hoffman set new standards for 12-year-old girls in the 200-metre and 1500m races in 25.90 seconds and 2:25.73, respectively.
Katherine Wagner posted Haida records in 10-year-old girls’ 200m (26.22), 400m (51.72) and 1500m (2:45.09), while Paulina Davydova set a new under-six girls mark of 1:45.80 in her 400m race.
Among the boys, Lucas Herold
broke the former club record in 10-year-old boys’ 1500m, with a time of 2:52.52, while Zakary Sharp shredded three old standards for eight-year-old boys: 200m (26.51), 400m (53.50) and 1200m (2:52.35).
For many of the skaters, who ranged in ages five to 13, it was their first competition.
On the same weekend, six Burnaby Haida members competed at the Western Elite Circuit short track meet in Richmond.
In a field of 34 skaters, Chris Poljer-So produced a strong fifth-place result and established a new Neo Senior club record of 1:31.796 in the 1000m event.
Placing seventh overall was Cormac Chui, while Anton Shekhter placed ninth.
Also putting in solid showings in the boys race were Teunis Takemori, in 11th, Rorie Moir, in 17th, and Devin Gibson, in 24th place.
Breaking the old Haida junior girls club record in the 500- and 1000m events was Kiersten Hagen, with times of 50.352 and 1:44.23, respectively.
She completed the meet in 13th place among a field of 25 female participants.
