Peewees win silver with perfect backup - corrected

Burnaby wins the Alan Price Memorial peewee A1 division title at a minor lacrosse tournament in Kamloops on May 4.

Burnaby A peewees shrugged off an opening game loss to win the A1 division silver medal at the Alan Price Memorial minor lacrosse tournament in Kamloops a week ago.

Burnaby lost a narrow 9-8 opener to Saanich but was perfect the rest of the way, winning three straight matches, before having its comeback march ended following a 7-4 defeat to Juan de Fuca in the championship final.

Marcus Klarich was the key offensive contributor, while captain Thomas Vela showed leadership throughout the tourney as Burnaby got by Ridge Meadows 6-5 to advance to the final.

But the hero of the day was Kyle McKenzie, who filled in for regular goalie Jackson Murphy, who was hit in the head by a shot and had to leave the gold-medal game. McKenzie, a runner, filled in for Murphy and did not allow a goal, blanking the Island team the rest of the game.

Daniel Milkovich was also a standout at both ends of the floor with Ronin Sakamoto playing tough defence in every game.
