Runner praised, gridders felled

Smith finished 13 seconds behind the women's champion, finishing the six-kilometre race in a time of 21: 39.

"I just can't say enough about Jessica. This was a great finish to her university career. She's meant so much to our program over the years, and I'm very proud of her," said SFU head coach Brit Townsend in a prepared release.

Lindsey Butterworth also cracked the top five, posting a time of 22: 36.

Keir Forster placed 27th overall in the 8km men's event. B.J. Cunliffe finished just one second behind his Clan teammate in 28th spot. Anton Humeniuk trailed by just four seconds, finishing in a time of 26: 36.

Simon Fraser University fell behind early and never recovered in a 42-10 loss to Humboldt State in Arcata, California on Saturday.

The Lumberjacks scored five times in the first half against the varsity Clan, including the first four touchdowns in the Great Northwest conference matchup.

Down 28-0 after a pair of costly turnovers that led to Humboldt scores, quarterback Trey Wheeler led an SFU march downfield, with Greg Bowcott capping the six-play, 83-yard drive with a four-yard run.

SFU kicker Ian Sternau put three more points on the board for the visitors with a late field goal.

Junior Bo Palmer, who leads the conference with 1,144 yards rushing, led the Clan with 151 yards on the ground.

Justin Capicciotti and Kyle Miller shared the lead on defence with six-and-ahalf tackles apiece. Adam Berger added an interception for the Clan.

SFU winds up its GNAC regular season schedule against Central Washington with its final home game of the season on Saturday at Terry Fox Field. Game time is 2 p.m.
