Senior A Lakers get so important WLA road win

The Burnaby Lakers are still alive in the Western Lacrosse Association playoff race after a sorry effort at home on Friday.

The senior A Lakers eliminated the Nanaimo Timbermen from the post season, holding on to an 11-10 win on Sunday.

Just two days earlier, Burnaby appeared ready to throw in the post-season towel after a listless 10-5 loss at home to the Coquitlam Adanacs.

"There are no more pep talks. We know what we have to do," said Burnaby head coach Bob Johnston. "Danny Lewis was the best player and he had to be. We did a lot of things well on Sunday."

Lewis bounced back after a less-than stellar effort in goal against the Adanacs, stopping 43 shots in the win, including 17 in the middle period, against the T-Men.

Burnaby also got key three-point contributions from former Nanaimo junior Colton Clark and transition runner Peter McFetridge.

Carlton Schuss, Scott Jones and Justin Salt, just back off injury, also garnered three points apiece.

The win in Nanaimo sets up a final run to the wire by five teams for the final four spots in the playoffs in the final week of the regular season.

In the advent of a tie, the deciding factor between teams tied is total wins. If there is still a tie, the headto-head record between the teams would be used.

Last season, Burnaby missed the post season to Maple Ridge on the WLA ruling, despite winning the season series against the Burrards.

This season, the Lakers are in a potential similar situation because of draws occuring earlier in the season against Nanaimo and Maple Ridge.

The rule, which was introduced three seasons ago, begs the question, 'If wins are what decides the final placings in the regular season, why are teams playing for draws after a 10-minute overtime period?' asked Johnston.

"We got to get into the tournament and then we'll see if we are (as good) as we think we are," Johnston said. "I think all these teams have warts. They've all got issues and who can sort them out? But really, we just got to win to get in."

That could be a tall order for Burnaby, currently tied for fourth place with Victoria, with its remaining two games in the regular season against the current two first-place clubs.

Burnaby split a pair of games very early in the season against Langley.

The two teams meet in Burnaby's final home game of the regular season at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre on Friday night. Game time is 7: 45 p.m.

The Lakers will head into Coquitlam on Saturday with the season series on the line in their final regular season matchup. That game is a 7 p.m. start.

New Westminster is in fifth place with games against Coquitlam and Maple Ridge left to play.
