Swimmer Mariya Chekanovych of Burnaby committed to Simon Fraser University next season.

Chekanovych is one of the top five swimmers in the country in the 200metre breaststroke.

I'm so excited to be joining the SFU swimming program. I want to come into university and help SFU win an NCAA championship. - The coaching staff here is outstanding and there is a real focus on teamwork that I'm excited to be a part of," said Chekanovych in a prepared release.

The Simon Fraser Aquatic Club swimmer competed twice in the North American Challenge Cup, winning three gold medals in 2009 and five more gold and a bronze last year.

In 2009, the Canadian national development team member set new B.C. records in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, and was named youth athlete of the year.

"(Chekanovych) will bring high level performance and youth to our program as we push towards the NCAA," said SFU head coach Liam Donnelly in the release.
