SFU alumn signed one-year pro deal to play women's basketball in Germany next season

Simon Fraser University grad Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe signed with Friendsfactory Donau-Ries of the German Bundesliga for next season.

The 6-2 power forward/center played last season for Esperance Sportive Pully in the Swiss league, where she was named eurobasket.com centre of the year and defensive player of the year. 

Raincock finish fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 20 points per game, first in rebounds with 12.8 per game, fourth in assists with 2.7 per game, first in blocks with 1.4 per game, and seventh in steals with 2.9 per game.

While at SFU, Raincock-Ekunwe was named an NCAA II All-American in her senior season by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. She finished the year fourth in the Div. II in rebounding with 12.4 per game, third in double-doubles with 22, and first in field goal percentage at 65.3 per cent. Raincock-Ekunwe also averaged 16.8 points, 2.4 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game. After her collegiate career, her jersey was hung in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame “Ring of Honor.”

Raincock-Ekunwe also has extensive experience playing for her country. She played on the 2013 senior women’s national team that competed in the Four Nations women’s basketball tournament, Super Four international tournament, and an exhibition tour to Europe.

Raincock-Ekunwe also played on the Canadian development women’s national team for two years and was recently invited to tryout for the Senior women’s national team that will play in the upcoming world championships.

“I had a great time playing basketball in Europe last year and look forward to exploring a new league and team in Germany,” said Raincock-Ekunwe, in a press release. “I feel confident that I can add value for my new coaches, teammates, and the supporting community.”

Friendsfactory Donau-Ries finished the 2013-2014 season with a record of 7-15 and hope that the acquisition of Raincock-Ekunwe will help them move up the DBBL table this coming season.
