SFU Clan women's soccer team suffer tough 2-1 loss Saturday against Montana State University-Billings

Two days after earning their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference win of the season, the Simon Fraser Clan women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking home loss to Montana State on Saturday afternoon at Fox Field.

The 2-1 loss was unique in that all three goals were scored in the final two minutes of play.

Montana State's Kristen Kastelic scored in the 89th minute, but with only 14 seconds left in the game, SFU's Lia Marining fought her way to the Montana State net and buried the rebound to tie the game up.

Heartbreak for the Clan would come in injury time when Jaucelyn Richter put a shot on net that found its way past Clan 'keeper Amelia Ng as time expired.

"Today is a perfect example of why you play until the end," SFU head coach Shelley Howieson said in a press release. "It's unfortunate that the positive adrenaline after scoring the late goal didn't translate into ten seconds of defending."

The win comes after a thrilling 2-1 Clan win over the Northwest Nazarene University Crusaders on Oct. 20.

SFU started the scoring, courtesy of Karm Jawandha, who was wearing a face mask to protect a facial injury.

"Karm deserved that goal," said Howieson. "She kept her composure on the play and just did what she was supposed to do. She was playing injured and the face mask she had to wear really obstructed her vision."

Early in the second half, the Crusaders equalized when Jenny Field scored in the 52nd minute.

The winning goal would come in the 88th minute, when Burnaby native Jenna Piovesan took the initial shot, Jawandha had a rebound header that went off the crossbar and Marining got that rebound to pot the winner.

"Lia did a good job to stay with the play on that goal," said Howieson. "Just like Karm did earlier, she kept her composure on a tough play and scored a big goal for us."

The Clan are back at home this Thursday night when they host the Western Oregon Wolves at Fox Field at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
