Trinity Western track and field and cross-country head coach Laurier Primeau was named Canada's head coach for this summer's Pan American Junior Championships, which take place Aug. 23 to 25 in Medellin, Colombia.
A Simon Fraser University grad, Primeau, who will be entering his third year at Trinity Western this fall, will be donning the Maple Leaf as a head coach for the second straight summer after he also led Canada's Paralympic team at the 2012 Games in London.
This will be Primeau's fourth time attending the Pan-American junior championships as a coach. While coaching with Canada's national track and field team from 2002 to 2009, he was responsible for jumps, combined events and relays. He also helped guide Canada at three Pan-American championships.
In Primeau's second year leading the Spartans and in just the program's third year back in the CIS, he helped guide the women's track and field team to a second-place finish at the Canada West championships and a sixth-place finish at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships, both of which were program bests. This came just one year after the women's team finished seventh at the Canada West championships and 15th at the CIS championships.
Meanwhile, Primeau guided the Spartans men's track and field team to a sixth-place finish at this year's conference championships and a 17th-place finish amongst scoring teams at nationals.
On the trails, the Spartans women's cross country team finished 13th at nationals, while the men's team finished 14th.
The Pan-American junior championships is a biennial track and field event featuring athletes who are 19 years of age and under from the Americas.
