Simon Fraser University Athletics relieved Dave Johnson from his duties as head coach of the Clan’s varsity football program.
In a corresponding move, the Clan also announced that defensive coordinator James Colzie III was also fired.
“After carefully reviewing all aspects of our football program, we have decided it is time to seek a new leader for Clan football that will achieve the goals we have set for the program,” said Milt Richards, SFU's senior director of athletics and recreation in a prepared statement.
In seven years at the helm of the Clan, Johnson has posted a 18-46 record, including 6-17 in three seasons in Canadian Interuniversity Sport and 12-29 in four seasons in the NCAA Division II.
In his first season in the NCAA, SFU failed to win a game in the Great Northwest conference. SFU improved over the next two seasons, going from 3-6 in 2011, including a thrilling triple overtime victory against Dixie State to register its first-ever Div. II win, to 5-6 last season that included a coach of the year mention for Johnson.
“I want to thank coach Johnson, his family and his entire staff for all of their hard work. We all wish him and his family the best as they begin the next chapter of their life,” added Richards.
Last Saturday, the Clan wrapped up the 2013 season against Azusa Pacific with a 28-19 loss on Senior’s Day, finishing the year with a 3-7 record.
Offensive coordinator Nick Lucey was retained.
