Former Simon Fraser University track and field runner Jessica Smith took a big step towards her Olympic dream today when she set the Olympic A standard in the 800 metres at the Harry Jerome International Track Classic at Swangard Stadium on Sunday.
Smith became just the fourth Canadian woman to ever break the two minute mark, running the metic half-mile in a time of 1:59.86. Smith now needs to finish in the top three at the upcoming Canadian Olympic trials in Calgary to earn a spot on the national Olympic team. The Olympic trials take place from June 27 and 28.
Smith wrapped up her Clan career last fall, finishing second at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference cross-country championships where she was named to the all-conference team.
Smith capped off her collegiate track and field career with a conference championship in the 800m in May of last year.
Smith will try to qualify for the Games along with another former member of the Clan track and field team, Ruky Abdulai.
