SFU seniors share win in home-floor finale

Simon Fraser University knocks off Alaska Fairbanks on Senior's NIght in women's NCAA Division II basketball

Simon Fraser University seniors said good-bye the best way they know how.

Erin Chambers scored a game-high 25 points, while Katie Loewen chipped in with 15 as the Clan downed Alaska Fairbanks 81-62 on Seniors’ Night in Great Northwest women’s basketball on Saturday.

Chambers, who last week set a NCAA Division II conference all-time career scoring record, upped that number to 1,882 points following the win over Fairbanks and an earlier 63-59 loss to No. 1 Alaska Anchorage.

Loewen, an academic All-American majoring in business, also leads the conference with 46 three-point baskets this season.

Junior Meg Wilson contributed 16 points to the win, helping improve the fourth-place Clan’s conference record to 10-7.

Against Anchorage, SFU came close to knocking off the top-ranked Div. II team in the nation.

Chambers gave the Clan a 55-54 lead on a short jumper with 2:29 to go and then, trailing by five points, hit a pair jumpers to get to within a single point. But that’s as close as it got.

SFU will finish off its regular season next Saturday against Western Washington in Bellingham.

The Clan is one of four teams to have already secured a berth into the Great Northwest tournament to be held March 4 to 7.
