Simon Fraser University's Nicole Cossey finished on the podium on the final day of the NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships.
Cossey swam under the NCAA record in the 100-yard freestyle final but touched the wall in second place behind champion and new record holder Ana Azambuja of Wayne State in a winnig time of 48.94 seconds.
The Clan junior also earned All-American status following a sixth-place finish in the 50-yd. free on the opening day of the nationals in Geneva, Ohio.
"I knew I had a chance to win and really pushed for the final wall," said Cossey in a Clan press release. "I just needed another two metres on the race to take it."
Cossey also teamed up with Carmen Nam, Alex Schofield and Lauren Swistak for a ninth-place finish in the 400-yd. medley relay.
Cossey also broke Vicky Sui’s 2008 program record on the lead leg of SFU’s 12th-place-finishing 800-yd. free relay.
Nam posted an eighth-place finish in the women's 200-yd. butterfly final on Day 3 in her second straight appearance at the nationals. Schofield made the consolation final in the same event and at the shorter distance.
The Clan’s five-member women’s team finished in a tie for 18th overall with 83 total points.
“We managed to, on the merits of a very strong final session (on Saturday), push into the top 20. It is a positive result but I know our team is hungry to push back into the top 10 next year,” said SFU head coach Liam Donnelly.
