SFU takes back Achilles Cup

Simon Fraser University sets three new meet records in win over rival University of British Columbia

Simon Fraser University returned the Achilles Cup to Burnaby Mountain.

The Clan track and field team defeated the University of British Columbia in the annual dual meet between the two rival schools, ending a two-year reign by the Point Grey campus.

SFU edged UBC 120-108.5 at home to win its seventh cup on Monday.

The Clan won all four team events, including the men’s 4x400-metre relay team of Stuart Ellenwood, Cameron Proceviat, Joel Webster and Daniel Kelloway that set a new meet record with a winning 3:16.79 time.

Proceviat also broke the 11-year-old meet mark in the 800m, beating the old record of 1:52.68 set by UBC’s Jerry Ziak by more than four-tenths of a second.

Clan freshman Vladislav Tsygankov also had a new Achilles record leap of 7.04 metres in the men’s long jump.

SFU finished first in 13 of 23 events, with both the Clan men’s and women’s teams amassing 60 team points to defeat their UBC counterparts.

The Burnaby Mountain team now holds a 7-5-1 advantage over UBC in the Achilles Cup since the annual competition first began in 2003.

SFU won three consecutive cup titles from 2010 to 2012, the longest winning streak for either school.
