Trey Wheeler led the Simon Fraser University football team to its first-ever conference road win with a record day passing.
Wheeler, the Great Northwest conference passing leader, had as record day through the air, setting a new single game record for a quarterback with six touchdowns passing as SFU knocked off Dixie State 58-47 in a shootout at St. George, Utah on Saturday.
Wheeler completed 36 of 54 pass attempts for 482 yards, including 12 receptions for 228 yards and four TDs by Lemar Durant. The Coquitlam receiver came within eight yards of matching a conference record for most receiving yards in a single game.
Running back Bo Palmer also found the end zone on two occasions, rushing for 99 yards.
The Clan defence also put pressure on the Dixie State quarterback, sacking Griff Robles five times.
Wheeler currently leads the conference in almost all passing categories, as well as total offence, averaging 298.2 yards per game.
Wheeler currently leads the Great Northwest in passing with an average of 303.8 yards per game and 24 touchdowns. He also leads in pass completions, pass attempts and 2,734 total yards through the air.
Wheeler and Durant teamed up for three of the Clan's four second-quarter touchdowns, including a 73-yard strike and a 27-yard pass and run that put SFU in front 35-19.
Dixie State came back to knot tie the score 35-35 early in the final quarter.
But Wheeler found Jamal Kett on a 37-yard touchdown toss for his second score of the night.
On the ensuing drive, St. Thomas More product Keynan Parker forced a fumble turnover that led to Durant's final and game-winning TD score from 12 yards out.
The Clan are back at home against Humboldt State for its final home game of the season. Game time is 2 p.m.
