SFU wrestler fifth at junior worlds

The U.S. native missed most of last season with injury, so result at championships exciting, says Clan head coach
Mallory Velte
Simon Fraser University sophomore Mallory Velte placed fifth at the junior world wrestling championships in Brazil.

Simon Fraser University sophomore Mallory Velte lost her bronze medal match at 63 kilograms and placed fifth on the final day of women’s freestyle at the United World Wrestling Junior World Championships in Salvador, Brazil on Aug. 16.

The California native was competing for the United States. Velte lost her bronze-medal bout to Canada’s Braxton Stone-Papadopoulos, 4-2.

Stone-Papadopoulos is now a two-time junior world medalist, with a silver medal in 2013 and a bronze at this year’s competition.

In the first period, Stone-Papadopoulos got two points, one on the shot clock against Velte and one on a pushout.

In the last 10 seconds of the period, Velte scored a double leg takedown to tie it up at 2-2.

In the second period, referees put Velte on the shot clock again, and Stone scored a counter-takedown on a spin behind for the final 4-2 margin.

Velte missed last season with an injury, but has wrestled well all spring and summer, winning the trial for the USA to qualify for the world championships.

Velte was an All-American in her first year at SFU after winning the California high school championship.

“Given that Mallory has only had 12 matches in the past year her results against world class competition are exciting,” said Clan head coach Mike Jones in a Clan press release.

Velte opened the tournament against the defending champion Liubov Ovcharova from Russia, losing a close 10-7 contest.

Ovcharovat went on to win her second title, defeating Ragneta Gurbanzade of Azerbaijan in the final.
