Sinclair sets new goal scoring mark

Canadian national women's soccer team captain Christine Sinclair of Burnaby set a new national record for goals in a single international season in the leadup to the Summer Olympic Games in London.

Canadian national women's soccer team captain Christine Sinclair of Burnaby set a new national record for goals in a single international season in the leadup to the Summer Olympic Games in London.

Sinclair scored a record 17th goal for the Canadian national women's soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Brazil in a four-country competition in Switzerland on Tuesday.

Sinclair tied her previous record of 16 goals following a 2-0 win over New Zealand on July 14.

The record tally came in Sinclair's 11th match this year, also a new national record.

The goal was the 137th of Sinclair's international career.

The marker by the South Burnaby striker momentarily tied the match late in stoppage time following an error by the Brazilian keeper, but the South Americans quickly counterattacked to pull out the 2-1 victory.

Three days earlier, Sinclair notched her 16th international tally this season in the win, two minutes into the second half when Sophie Schmidt put her in on goal and the South Burnaby product beat New Zealand keeper Jenny Bindon with a low, hard shot.

The Burnaby star also broke Canada's all-time goal scoring record against Bindon with the 72nd goal of her career back in 2007.

Canada will compete in the London Games from July 25 to Aug. 9. The Canadians will open the tournament in Coventry against Japan.
