School is in session and SFU's women's soccer team will be plus one Di Lorenzo this season as Andrea Di Lorenzo joins her older sister Marissa on the pitch. Like her sister, freshman Clan teammate Andrea graduated from St. Thomas More Collegiate. Andrea will be vying for a position mid field, while her sister backs her up on defence.
Head coach Shelley Howieson was impressed with Andrea's hard work and drive on the field, according to a media release.
"Andrea's ability to pass the ball and her high work rate will increase the competitive atmosphere on the team," Howieson added in the release.
Andrea has played on the provincial team, trained at B.C.'s National Training Centre and has competed at both the Dana Cup in Denmark and the Gothia Cup in Sweden.
When deciding which school to attend for her post-secondary studies, Andrea said she compared academic and athletic programs.
"When I was looking at different schools, I narrowed the decision down based on academics, the group dynamic of the team and the quality of the coaching. SFU seemed like a great fit," she explained in the release. "My sister and I are close, and having her there already really gave me a feel for what to expect."
Andrea added she is excited to play with her sister, Marissa, a senior at SFU, this year.
"We've never played competitively together before, so that will be a nice bonus, to play with her as I start my collegiate career," she said in the release.
Simon Fraser's women's soccer team wrapped up its exhibition season with a 2-0-1 record. Preseason play culminated with a 2-0 win over Peninsula College Pirates on Aug. 31. The Clan women are on the road for the next few weeks facing non-conference opponents in California. They'll be back on Sept. 26 against the Saint Martin Saints.
