Soccer men win first on 50th anniversary

It was also the first victory for the Clan's new head coach

Simon Fraser University won its home opener on the day of the institution’s 50th anniversary on Wednesday.

The win, a 3-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino at Terry Fox Field, was the program’s first victory this season and also the first for new Clan head coach Clint Schneider.

“I am just excited for the guys to get their first win of the season because we deserved more than our record has shown,” said Schneider in a Clan press release. “This will give us momentum, and we will be a dangerous team moving forward.”

SFU fired 27 shots at Coyotes goalkeeper Mike Warn, who was the victim of a first-half penalty shot goal by Kyle Jones.

Adam Jones helped set up the team’s second goal of the game in the 76th minute, crossing the ball into the penalty area for a waiting Calvin Opperman, who tallied the 2-0 counter low into the left side of the San Bernardino goal.

Adam Jones then collected his first goal of the season on a late penalty kick in extra time.

Clan keeper Brandon Watson made two stops in goal to post his first shutout of the year.

“I’m really proud of our guys because they just kept going and going, and I told them afterwards that’s the SFU way. We don’t give a team an inch and we just keep going until we get that goal,” Schneider added. “We worked really hard for this one.”

SFU will open the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season against Western Washington University in Bellingham on Saturday, Sept. 19.
