South Burnaby wins own u-13 hoop tournament

The South Burnaby Metro Club won two-of-three divisions at the annual Metropolis Basketball Classic tournament in Burnaby last week. The Metro Eagles won the Division 1 title, while the South Burnaby All-Stars took top billing in the Div.

The Metro Eagles won the Division 1 title, while the South Burnaby All-Stars took top billing in the Div. 2 championship in the under-13 hoop tourney at the Bonsor rec centre.

The metro club Raptors also made the final of Div. 3 but wound up losing to Champlain 48-38 in the tournament final.

The Eagles rode a four-game win streak to the Div. 1 crown, defeating Drive Elite 65-48 in the final game behind double-digit scoring from team MVP Tyler Pearce, with 12 points, and Cameron Morris with 10. Pearce was second in overall team scoring with 43 points, including 17 in an earlier tournament win over Drive Elite.

Tournament MVP Curtis Laigo led the Eagles in team scoring with 50 points, including high games of 19 and 14 points in Burnaby's wins over AthElite Academy and RBL Rebels, respectively.

Eric Urmaza and Jovanic Castillo, with 16 points against AthElite, both garnered 27 points in the four games. Vince Sunga chipped in with a dozen points in an opening 69-27 win over the Rebels.

Div. 2 tournament MVP Richard Galicia helped lead the All-Stars to a perfect 5-0 record following a one-sided 58-26 win over 3D Elite in the championship final. Bushra Gabreldar had a team-high 11 points for Burnaby.

Galicia led the club team with 54 points, while Noah Pastrana chipped in with 33 and Abram Robiso added 29.

Kris Quilang and Francis Federipe scored 12 and seven points, respectively, in earlier 50-48 win over Ballaholics.

The Raptors lost in the Div. 2 semifinals 68-59 to 3D Elite despite a huge individual weekend outing by team MVP Joshua Jaurigue, who had a whopping 79 total points.

Zach Underhill and Felix Zhou also put up big numbers, scoring 45 and 37 points, respectively.

The Raptors took third place following a 40-31 win over Drive Premier behind a team-high 11 points from Kelvin Dela Rosa.

In Div. 3, Luka Cuk was the u-12 Eagles' MVP and top scorer with 51 points. Deshawn Wong tallied 37 total points and Raphael Alcorzea scored 32 for the 4-1 Eagles.
