The new-look Grandview Steelers stole a point from the best team in junior B hockey.
The Steelers came back to tie the Pacific International Junior Hockey League leading Delta Ice Hawks 2-2 at the Burnaby Winter Club on Sunday.
Game star Sean Lan scored the game-winning goal with the only score in the third period with his seventh tally of the season at 13: 58. The overtime period was scoreless.
Colton Shock from Ryan Panichelli and Nicholas Hermary kept the score close, teaming up to knot the contest 1-1 midway through the middle frame despite being outshot 11-3 in the second period.
The single point, coupled with a 6-5 double-overtime win over the Mission City Outlaws on Oct. 18, lifted the Burnaby-based club out of the basement of the Tom Shaw conference.
Unlike earlier games this season where Grandview lost momentum in the latter periods, the Steelers employed a zone system that held the high-scoring Ice Hawks to less than 30 shots on goal.
Rookie goalie Joshua Friesen, named third star against Delta, was in the net for both results.
"We've been getting leads and blowing them. So we felt we had to try something different," said Grandview head coach Aldo Bruno. "Team defence has let us down, so hopefully changes will make a difference."
In Mission, Anthony Dispirito scored two goals and was named the second star in the club's fifth win of the year.
Darcy Rai, with his first tally of the season, counted the game-winner in the second period of OT with an assist from Jordan Hall.
The Steelers take on Port Moody and Ridge Meadows in a pair of non-conference games this weekend.
Grandview is in Port Moody on Saturday before returning home to host the Flames at the winter club on Sunday. Game time is 4 p.m.
