Simon Fraser University sophomore Michael Belle of Burnaby was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference player of the week in men's golf after leading the Clan to a sixth place finish last week in the Cal State San Marcos Fall Classic.

Belle, a St. Thomas More Collegiate grad, finished in a tie for ninth place in the 54-hole tournament with a total score of 224.

He was just eight shots back of the winner, Jeremy Sanders of Redlands University, who carded a 216.

"Michael is an incredibly hard-working individual who puts in the time to be a good golfer. I'm not at all surprised that he was recognized with this award," said SFU head coach John Buchanan in a prepared release.

Belle finished the fall season ranked sixth in scoring in the conference with a 74.3 average, more than a three stroke improvement on his 77.9 round average last year.

DOUBLES WINNER

Burnaby's Kamil Pajkowski moved up the world's ATP tennis tour with a win in men's doubles at the recent $10,000 Florida Futures competition in Pensacola, Florida.

Top seeds Pajkowski and American partner Maciek Sykit defeated No. 3 seeded Chris Letcher and Brendan Moore of Australia 6-3, 6-4 in the championship final.

Pajkowski is ranked 488th in the world ATP doubles.
