STM places second in high school golf - updated

St. Thomas More Knights placed runner-up to Kwalikum at B.C. high school AA golf championships; Brendan Lancaster placed third in individual standings

St. Thomas More placed second at the B.C. high school AA golf championships on Wednesday.

The former four-time provincial AA champs were nipped for top spot by 16 strokes by defending champion Kwalikum Secondary. STM also won a provincial invitational tournament during the public teacher's job action in 2012.

Brendan Lancaster led the Knights, tying for third place overall in the individual standings, finishing with a one-over-par 145 at the Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach. Lancaster opened the two-day event with a one-under-71.

Mary Parsons was a pleasant surprise, finishing in 10th place with an eight-over 152, firing rounds of 75 and 77.

Grade 8 Knight Jack Dickie, one of the youngest golfers in the competition, also shot well finishing in 26th place at 14-over following rounds of 76 and 82.

Rene Cheng, who stepped in for senior Breanna Croxen, had rounds of 82 and 80. Nathan Punzo played through health issues that affected his second-day score, shooting a 97 after an opening-round 87.

Shawnigan Lake’s Tristan Mandur led the field from Day 1, shooting a pair of three-under 69s to place first with a 138 – six-under-par.

Kwalicum student Santiago Bouyra finished runner-up with a two-under 142.

Kwalikum shot a combined 25-over-par 601 on its home course to win the AA banner.

Smithers finished third, just two shots behind the Knights. Shawnigan placed fourth.

"We've had five first places in a row, a third last year and then a second this year. STM is the place to be if you want to be part of a championship-minded program," said golf coach Joe Thierman.
