Seven members of the St. Thomas More Knights senior football program were named as AAA Eastern Counference all-stars this week, led by Defensive MVP Ben Steele.
Steele, at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, posted fifth-best 41 tackles and five quarterback sacks over six games this season.
Joining him with an all-star honour are fellow linemen Demarius Henderson (defensive), Nico Cesaerei (offensive) and Phil Lemp.
Luca Bellini, who registered 692 yards and averaged 115.33 per game was one of two running backs chosen to the lineup. The all-purpose back also scored seven majors on the ground, with an average of 8.44 yards per carry.
Defensively, linebacker Landon Jackson and defensive back Matt Smigel were also among those 23 all-stars named.
Chilton sets local pace at BC x-country final
Emily Chilton and Saira Purhar pushed it right to the finish line, posting the top senior times for Burnaby-New Westminster runners at last week’s B.C. High School Cross-Country championships.
Chilton, of New West, placed 37th in senior girls with a time of 20.02 minutes, just over three minutes behind Vernon’s Hannah Bennison’s first-place time.
In 39th spot was Purhar, of Burnaby Mountain, with a time of 20.07. Finishing 56th overall was Burnaby South’s Jennifer Shannon.
The top local senior boys’ result was Moscrop’s Nick Sanchez, at 104th with a time of 28.30. The junior boys pace was set by Charles Yu’s 19.24 time for Burnaby Central, while South’s Shea Janke was 37th.
Lions lead bantam pack
The Burnaby Mountain Lions ruled the roost in bantam girls volleyball, topping the league with a 4-1 record.
League all-stars were: Sarah Svetic (Alpha); Awek Deng (Burnaby South); Mika Kurahashi and Angel Kanyamuneza (Moscrop); Michelle Kitching (Mountain); and Marina Roseta (Byre Creek).
