Tennis junior wins third Stanley Park title

Katerina Boiko of Burnaby won her third consecutive open women's singles title at the Stanley Park Open tennis championships. The home-schooled 18-year-old and No. 2-ranked women's tennis player in B.C.

Katerina Boiko of Burnaby won her third consecutive open women's singles title at the Stanley Park Open tennis championships.

The home-schooled 18-year-old and No. 2-ranked women's tennis player in B.C., behind Rachel Marino, overcame Daniella Silva to win the women's title for a third straight time at the 82nd annual Stanley Park Open on July 28.

Boiko, who won her first open title as a 16-year-old, defeated the fifth-seeded Silva 7-6, 6-4 in the final.

Boiko's stiffest competition came in the second round from Stacey Fung, winning a tiebreaker in each of the sets 7-6 to move onto the semifinals.

Another local teen, Khristina Blajkevitch, made it to a pair of doubles finals at the Stanley Park Open, winning the mixed doubles title with Jerry Turek 6-3, 6-2 over No. 2 seeds Stefi Gjine and Nick Coutts in final.

The No. 1 seeds were extended to three games by unseeded Patrick Hall and Silva 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in their opening round match.

Blajkevtich also teamed with Nicoleta Ratiu for a silver medal in the women's open final.

The No. 3 seeded pair upset top seeds Jena Cheng and Madison Shoemaker 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the semifinals to advance to the open final.

Fourth seeds Tracy Dong and Trudie Du Toit won the women's final over Blajkevitch and Ratiu in straight sets 7-6, 6-1. In the men's open singles, Philip Bester defeated defending champion George Jecminek 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the final.

Coutts and Patrick Flint, the No. 1 seeded men's doubles pairing, won the open in three sets over No. 2 Henry Choi and Jeremy Salvo.

Coutts and Flint advanced to the final with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over three seeds Daniel Chu and Jecminek in the semifinal.
