Three Simon Fraser University track and field athletes were named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-academic team on Wednesday.
Leading the way for the Clan is Helen Crofts. The senior biomedical physiology major boasts the highest grade point average in the conference at 4.14.
Heading into the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships, Crofts posted the best time in the NCAA in the 800-metre this season with a 2:04.53 clocking, the seventh-best time in the 1,500m at 4:26.85 and the 10th-best time in the 400m at 54.46.
Junior Kirstin Allen is a repeat member of the all-academic team. The kinesiology major has a 3.80 GPA this year.
Rounding out the Clan's selections to the all-academic squad is James Young, marking the third time he has been named to the all-scholar quad. The biomedical physiology student posted a 3.76 GPA.
To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must have a grade-point average of 3.20 or greater and have set at least a conference provisional qualifying mark in the field or on the track.
Members of the SFU track and field team, including Crofts, will be back in action next week, when they travel to Pueblo, Colorado for the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships.
In addition to Crofts, runners Sarah Sawatzky, Michaela Kane, Lindsey Butterworth and Chantel Desch will compete, while Great Northwest discus champion Jade Richardson will also compete.
