Three medals for sprinter at West Can Games

Burnaby's Francis Klimo posted a personal-best time in the 100 metres to win an individual bronze medal at Wood Buffalo, Alta. Games

Francis Klimo won three medals in track at the Western Canada Summer Games.

The 19-year-old Burnaby sprinter ran a personal-best 10.84 time to win a bronze medal in the men’s 100-metre dash against a national-level field, while also picking up a pair of gold medals with Team B.C. in the relays at the Games held in Wood Buffalo, Alta. earlier this week.

Klimo, who is entering his second year at Simon Fraser University, bettered his previous best by one-tenth of a second in the 100m final. He also placed just off the podium in fourth in the 200m in a time of 22.10.

“He won a medal, which is good,” said Klimo’s Elite Track and Field Academy coach Krassimir Velkov. “It’s the highest level for him. He’s improving, improving and now he’s catched up.”

In the relays, Klimo shared gold with Team B.C. in both the 4x100m and 4x400m.

“I got my placing and I got my lane,” said Klimo, who won three gold medals at the provincials earlier in the season. “It’s been a great season.”

B.C. also won a gold medal in men’s basketball.

St. Thomas More Knights forward Cam Morris scored nine points in B.C.’s 66-60 win over Manitoba in the gold-medal final. Morris also netted eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, in the province`s 86-41win over Alberta in the crossover matchup.

Burnaby Central Secondary student Sara Brinkac won the girls’ 57-kilogram silver medal, following an earlier fourth-place result at the national cadet championships.

STM’s Caileen Corbett won a gold in girls’ wrestling, taking top spot in spot in the 38 to 40 kilogram division.

Celine May of Burnaby shared a silver medal in the girls’ team competition in artistic gymnastics.

In girls’ basketball, Lindsey Evelyn Bott of Burnaby scored seven points in B.C.’s 56-48 victory over Alberta for the bronze medal at the Western Canada Games.

Burnaby Lake canoeist Samantha Loutet shared a bronze medal in the C-4 1,000 metre race. The 14-year-old paddler also placed fourth in the 200m singles and C-2 1,000m doubles and fifth in 500 and 5,000m pairs.
