Too little, too late for Burnaby Jr. B hockey Steelers

The Grandview Steelers did what they had to do, but it proved not enough for the Pacific International Junior Hockey League club.

The Grandview Steelers did what they had to do, but it proved not enough for the Pacific International Junior Hockey League club.

The Burnaby-based Steelers won their final two regular season games to draw level with the North Vancouver Wolf Pack in the race for the final Tom Shaw conference playoff berth.

The Steelers doubled North Vancouver 4-2 on Saturday, before earning a 7-5 win over the league champion Richmond Sockeyes at the Burnaby Winter Club on Sunday.

"The guys gave it a really good run in our last nine games, but we needed a little help from other teams and didn't get it," said Steelers' head coach Aldo Bruno.

North Van earned the final playoff berth over Grandview on more wins, eliminating the Burnaby club despite its sixth-best league record.

Kentaro Tanaka was named first star in his final junior B game, tallying three points, including the game-winning marker in a four-goal Burnaby third period. Joel Gaudet also had a goal and two assists for the Steelers.

A day earlier, Tanaka also got the secondperiod game-winner against North Van to finish the season with a team-high 39 points.

Kyle Golz scored a shorthanded counter to lead Grandview with 17 goals this season.
