Two members of the varsity football Clan named pre-season All-Americans

Two members of the Simon Fraser University football team have been named to the pre-season Beyond Sports Network All-American team.

Two members of the Simon Fraser University football team have been named to the pre-season Beyond Sports Network All-American team.

Offensive lineman Matthias Goosen earned a spot on the second team, while runningback Bo Palmer found a place on the third team.

"It's an honour to be recognized with this award," said Goosen. "Our team has come a long way since our first year in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and we expect big things this season. This puts a little extra pressure on me to perform at a high standard, but I've been working hard to be the best I can be."

Goosen started in all 10 games last season as a sophomore.

"It's great to have two players recognized on this list, but at the same time, I still feel we have so many quality players here that should be recognized. With four players drafted into the CFL last year it shows how strong our program is and the quality of players we have here," added Goosen.

Last season, Goosen was named a first team conference all-star.

Palmer received honourable mention on the BSN All-American teams after last season before moving up to the third team this year.

"Being an honourable mention after last season and now making the third team is very exciting, especially heading into my senior year," said Palmer. "It certainly gives me a little more motivation heading into the season."

Last season, Palmer ran for 1,274 yards, which was second in the Great Northwest conference, averaging 5.6 yards per carry and scoring eight touchdowns on the season.

Palmer was also named a first team conference all-star along with Goosen last season.

The 2012 SFU football season kicks off on Aug. 30 against Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. The Clan's 2012 home opener is Saturday, Sept. 8 against Central Washington University at Terry Fox Field.
