Madeleine Hait of Burnaby led Simon Fraser University to its first NCAA Division II conference win in women's volleyball last week.
The Burnaby Central grad led the Clan with 14 kills and 20 points in last Thursday's five-set win over Northwest Nazarene at home.
Hait leads the Clan with 65 total blocks, including a team-high 51 block assists. The sophomore middle blocker is also third on the team with 120 total kills and second in service aces with 15.
Freshman setter Tamara Nipp was also a driving force in the victory, notching 54 assists. Jessica Young chipped in with a strong night, recording 17 kills for the Clan.
"We really worked on playing point-for-point and it turned out in our favour," said Nipp in an SFU press release. "We wanted to keep things simple and we went back to what we worked on in practice, and it really paid off."
SFU took the opening set and was a point away from taking a 2-0 lead before allowing Northwest Nazarene to steal the set with a game-changing 5-0 run.
After splitting the third and four sets, SFU broke open a tied tiebreaker with a 5-0 run of its own to win the contest 15-11.
On Saturday, SFU came close to upsetting the second-place team in the Great Northwest confernce.
SFU took 21st-ranked Central Washington to five sets before falling 25-21, 2125, 25-18, 23-25, 17-15 at home.
"It's really nice to know that all our hard work is finally paying off," said Alanna Chan, who had 20 digs in the loss. "Even though it's a loss, it's the best we've played together as a team this year."
Young led the Clan with 23 kills.
The loss dropped SFU's overall record to 4-14.
