The Moscrop seniors boys volleyball team has another trophy for its case after winning the Douglas College senior boys volleyball tournament in Coquitlam on Sept. 14 and 15. Moscrop won all four matches in round-robin play and dropped only one set in the entire tournament.
Moscrop beat Vancouver's Eric Hamber in straight sets, 25-17 and 25-20, in the best-of-three championship.
Moscrop lost their only set in the semi-finals, but won a 15-10 tiebreaker over Langley Fundamental to get to the final.
Moscrop players Zachary Or and J.J. Cross were named to the all-star team, with Cross also winning the tournament's most valuable player. Burnaby North also competed in the tournament, finishing in 11th place.
The Panthers then followed up their win with a second-place showing at the 48th annual UBC senior boys invitational tournament on Sept. 28 and 29 out in Point Grey.
The Panthers, currently ranked fifth provincially, were outplayed by and lost to No. 2-ranked Earl Marriott in their first match in pool play.
The Panthers rebounded, winning their remaining three matches to finish second in their pool.
Moscrop beat George Elliot and Elgin Park before beating Langley Christian 23-25, 25-22 and 15-11 in the semifinals.
In the final, Moscrop lost to No. 3-ranked Fraser Heights 25-14, 30-28.
Or and Cross were once again named to the all-star team.
Holy Cross takes win at cross-country meet
Burnaby's Holy Cross Elementary was the big winner at Wednesday's Lower Mainland Catholic Elementary Schools cross-country championships.
Holy Cross won the overall team championship with 694 points, besting 29 other Catholic elementary schools. In total, more than 1,800 athletes competed, with Sacred Heart from Ladner coming second and another Burnaby school, St. Helen's, finishing third in the overall competition.
The championships were held at Swangard Stadium and Holy Cross was led by coach Casey Durnin, who helped shepherd his 100 student runners to the overall championship.
