Life isn’t so great for South Burnaby residents who live on Marine Drive.

For one thing, the streets doesn’t have many safe places to walk because of a lack of sidewalks. Ratrunners also love racing along this residential street to avoid Marine Way during rush hour.

Now, the residents are facing dump trucks. A lot of them, according to residents who have contacted the NOW after a constant stream of dump trucks started arriving about a week ago.

They are rumbling down Marine Drive roughly every five minutes, according to Marlene – a Marine Drive resident who didn’t want her last name used due to fear of reprisals from dump truck drivers.

“The speed they are going is unbelievable and they straddle the yellow line on the side, which makes like miserable for pedestrians because there aren’t any sidewalks here,” she said.

The dump trucks are heading west to Nelson and turning left towards Marine Way.

According to the City of Burnaby, this stretch of Marine Drive is not a designated truck route. The truck route ends at Marine Drive and Southridge Drive/Byrne Road.

Marlene says she has contacted the Burnaby RCMP and was told that other residents had complained, but “nothing has changed.” The City of Burnaby is unable to stop truck drivers.

“This just isn’t fair,” says Marlene, who is hoping either the police get involved or the truck drivers finish whatever project they are delivering loads to in South Burnaby.
