The Cineplex theatre at Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby has been dealt another blow.
New COVID-19 restrictions from the Province of B.C. mean the theatre has had to close.
“We temporarily closed our network of theatres across the province last night, in accordance to government directives,” said an email from Cineplex. “Any movie-lovers that have tickets to an upcoming showtime are encouraged to reach out to our guest services team for a full refund.”
The bad news comes as the theatre was trying to quell the "severe" financial impacts of COVID-19 with new programs that included private rentals in an attempt to lure back moviegoers.
Cineplex reported a net loss of $121.2 million, with the chain's revenue sitting at $61 million in the three months ending Sept. 30 - down from $418.4 million during the same period in 2019.
Analysts expected Cineplex to lose $57.3 million or $1.31 per share, according to financial data firm Refinitiv.
The local theatre recently launched Private Movie Nights – a new private screening offering.
Starting at $125 for groups of up to 20 guests, these movie experiences included a private auditorium rental and the choice of more than 1,000 movie titles, such as Love Actually orThe Grinch. Cineplex has film titles for everyone including new and current releases, holiday favourites and all-time classics.
