A Burnaby-based Down syndrome foundation is looking to offer free services to families over the phone or online while shutting its doors and suspending in-person services indefinitely.

The Down Syndrome Resource Foundation made the call following an announcement from the provincial government, which closed all schools and in-person services indefinitely in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“DSRF recognizes and acknowledges the difficulty this imposes for families who rely on us. We do not take suspension of our essential services lightly, but the health of our families, the health of our team members and the health of British Columbia, is foremost in our mind,” reads a statement from the foundation.

DSRF said the measure is “completely in step” with actions from the government, and the organization will be keeping in touch with officials “to stay on top of the issue.”

In the meantime, DSRF said it is developing ways to provide services for families, including over the phone and online. The statement also acknowledges the financial pressures on families at the moment.

“For this reason, and until further notice, all services of the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation will be provided free of charge,” the statement reads.

“We hope that in some small way, it gives families of individuals with Down syndrome comfort knowing their health, safety and well-being remains our number 1 priority. … We remain resolute that, working together, hand-in-hand, we will successfully navigate this very challenging period.”
