A driver caught in Burnaby using two cell phones at the same time should have heeded the advice on a sticker stuck to his dashboard: ‘Texting can wait.’
Burnaby RCMP was out at Boundary Road and Grandview Highway Monday as part of a campaign to combat distracted driving during distracted driving awareness month in B.C., according to spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj.
Police caught 12 distracted drivers, including two truckers and the driver with the duelling phones, according to a post on the detachment's Twitter account.
"On a daily basis, our officers are finding way too many drivers using electronic devices while behind the wheel," Kalanj said in an emailed statement. "Please pull over to send your text or make your call."
Burnaby RCMP launched its campaign earlier this month by hanging a big banner from the pedestrian overpass near Kingsway and Boundary Road.
Despite that and a number of smaller signs warning drivers that police were conducting distracted driving enforcement in the area, officers still caught people on their phones, according to Chief Supt. Deanne Burleigh.
“They were able to pull over people on their phones after all of that visible presence,” Burleigh told the city’s public safety committee last week.
