Burnaby firefighters made a dramatic rescue Tuesday afternoon after finding a man not breathing in a smoky apartment. The man, however, did not survive.

At 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Burnaby firefighters responded to an apartment fire at 281 Holdom Ave.

When crews arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from a suite on the first floor.

Firefighters knocked down the flames and then began a search of the apartment, finding an adult male not breathing inside.

The firefighters carried the fire victim out of the apartment through the balcony and onto a patch of grass in the complex’s courtyard.

Fire crews then started CPR on the male until BCEHS paramedics could arrive.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm, bringing additional units to help stop the fire from spreading throughout the building.
