The City of Burnaby has cancelled all of its events and programs for the entire summer due to COVID-19.

“The City of Burnaby has made the difficult decision to cancel events and programs slated for this summer in order to meet the physical distancing and public gathering requirements set out by the Provincial Health Officer during the COVID-19 pandemic,” read a news release.

All large-scale City-organized events in Burnaby have been cancelled until Sept. 30. Events cancelled include Canada Day, Symphony in the Park, Giro di Burnaby and World Rivers Day.

“City staff will continue to be guided by the Provincial Health Officer as we evaluate any events scheduled for the fall.”

Additionally, the city has formally cancelled all programs that normally operate out of city facilities, including community recreation centres and cultural facilities. Programs that the City of Burnaby offers in parks as well as afterschool programs in Burnaby schools have also been cancelled. These cancellations apply for programs between now and Sept. 30.

Residents who signed up for city-run programs will receive credits on their city registration (webreg) account, the city said, adding that those who would like a refund in a different form should contact a community centre.

While community centres are currently closed to the public, staff are available to answer phone calls (hours vary by location).
