Firefighters had to break into a Burnaby apartment to reunite a toddler with its mom Sunday morning.

Crews were called to an apartment building on Norfolk Street at about 10:15 a.m., according to assistant fire chief Stewart Colbourne.

Inside one of the suites, a mother had become separated from her child by a toddler-proof lock on one of the inside doors.

“It got pushed closed and then it latched shut,” Colbourne said. “The lock was on the wrong side, so the mom was on the inside and the kid was on the outside.”

There was no medical emergency, according to the chief, but firefighters had to force the lock into the apartment to get inside.

“Then it was just a matter of taking the toddler lock off and opening the door,” Colbourne said, “and both mom and child were reunited and everything was fine.”
