Charges are pending against a 33-year-old Surrey man suspected in a grocery store robbery that saw the man allegedly threaten a loss-prevention officer with a knife.

Burnaby RCMP responded to reports of a robbery in the Metrotown area just before 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Witnesses said the suspect stole items from the store and then, after being confronted about the theft, threatened a loss-prevention officer with a knife before taking off.

Meanwhile, two officers conducting foot patrols in the area located a man acting suspiciously in an alleyway near Central Boulevard.

The man, who fit the description of the suspect, was stopped and subsequently arrested.

Charges of theft and assault with a weapon are now being considered.
