Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian has recused himself from the New Democratic Party's federal council meeting today while members determine the rules under which new leadership candidates will run.

Julian and party president Brian Topp have opted out of the meeting in case of potential conflicts on interest if they choose to run. Federal council members are deciding things such as when the race will take place, spending limits and vote distribution. They are expected to wrap up by 1:30 p.m. PDT.

Julian recently told the NOW he's open to the idea of running.

"Some people have urged me to run for leader, and I've simply said I'm keeping the door open, and I'm listening to people, and I'm taking advice. That's it," he said.

Julian was first elected as MP for Burnaby-New Westminster in 2004 and was part of Layton's initial caucus, which has grown from 19 members to 103. Julian went to university in Quebec and speaks French fluently.
