Canada Way was closed in both directions near Edmonds in Burnaby last night due to a major police incident in which Burnaby RCMP surrounded a duplex.

Police eventually entered the home before midnight and a man was arrested. The suspect was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.

"We considered him armed and dangerous based on his history," Lower Mainland RCMP Insp. Dale Carr told media after the standoff ended.

Earlier in the evening, two louds bangs were heard at approximately 9:40 p.m. at the home at Canada Way and 19th Avenue and then a police officer was heard yelling, "Come out, we have the house surrounded."

After this, a third bang was heard and then an officer yelled, "Come out with hands up, you're under arrest."

They also used a bullhorn to encourage the person to come out.

“We have a job to do here to make sure everyone is safe," said an officer. "Let's make sure we get everything sorted out so everyone can move on.”

Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Bill Iggulden spoke with the NOW and said police had been called out to the home due to an unspecified incident, he said.

"There was an incident earlier and that's why we initially were there," Iggulden said.
