Burnaby residents make it too easy for mail thieves

The Burnaby RCMP is asking the public to take steps to avoid becoming a victim of mail theft.

Whether you live in a single dwelling home or in an apartment complex, there is always a risk of having your mail stolen. There are several steps you can take to reduce the odds of becoming a victim of mail theft. These are some of them:

  • Retrieve your mail as soon as possible after delivery. Do not leave mail in your mailbox overnight.
  • If you’re going to be away, use the Hold Mail service from Canada Post to suspend delivery until you return, or have someone collect your mail for you if they can do so daily.
  • Check the physical security of your mailbox to ensure there are no gaps or damages.
  • If you’re shopping online, check to see how the business delivers the package. Avoid those using carrier companies that would leave packages at your front door if you know you won’t be home.
  • Report all suspicious activities around mailboxes to police and Canada Post.

If you live in an apartment complex:

  • Never use your intercom to let a stranger enter your building.
  • Never hold the outer door open for strangers when you’re entering or leaving your building.

“Mail theft can quickly become identity theft, which can be a major inconvenience, not to mention the possible financial hardships that come with it,” says Corporal Mike Kalanj of the Burnaby RCMP.
