Burnaby's community police offices are now open again, but there are social distancing measures in place.

If you’ve been champing at the bit to get fingerprinted by police, you’re in luck.

Fingerprinting and other services are now once again available at the main Burnaby RCMP detachment office (6355 Deer Lake Ave.) after being suspended in March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Community police offices throughout the city have also been reopened.

“In the last few months we have had to curtail our events and limit contact with all of you in our community; however, I am heartened that we are able to reopen our community police offices and look forward to resuming community events when our health officials let us know it is safe to do so,” Chief Supt. Deanne Burleigh said in a press release Tuesday.

Burleigh urged patience, however, since ongoing COVID-19 precautions may make front counter areas in the community police offices and main detachment busier than usual.

Fingerprinting is only available by appointment, and there are strict limits on the number of people allowed in the lobby areas of police buildings, according to the press release.

Burleigh said the pandemic has brought a lot of unknowns to the city but she is proud of the way detachment staff have responded and thankful for support from community members.

“Whether it was notes taped to the doors of our detachment and community police offices, letters and pictures from local schools, or emails and letters sent directly to me, you have helped to lift us up, and we feel privileged to have the opportunity to provide policing service to such a supportive community,” Burleigh said.
