Burnaby’s Old Orchard Centre is getting an escape room, according to publicly available documents.

The City of Burnaby lists Bamboozled Entertainment under the description of a building permit issued for 17-4429 Kingsway.

The building permit describes the construction, valued at $187,235, as “Interior alterations & finishing to create an escape room.”

Escape rooms are indoor games that have teams of players – as the name suggests – escape a room within a certain amount of time. To escape, players must solve puzzles, find hidden objects, answer riddles or achieve some other goals.

The activities have grown somewhat in popularity in the last couple of decades.

The development comes as the mall loses a venue offering another activity, one declining in popularity over the past few decades. The NOW recently reported on the Old Orchard Five-Pin Bowling Centre’s permanent closure and the decline of five-pin bowling not just in Burnaby, but throughout the country.

Old Orchard was home to the last living five-pin lanes in Burnaby, and local leagues now must figure out whether they should fold or find a new bowling alley.
