Burnaby speeders nailed going twice the limit in playground zones

Sure, Father’s Day feels like a bit of a Hallmark holiday, but it still feels good to celebrate great parents.

It’s not the time to be ignoring local laws and putting children at risk

But that’s what happened on Sunday when the Burnaby RCMP’s traffic enforcement unit stung a bunch of reckless speeders on Father’s Day.

The officers targeted playground zones to catch speeds ignoring the 30 km/h rules.

A total of 20 tickets were handed out and a whopping 11 drivers were caught doing more than double the speed limit.

Now, sure, double the limit might not seem like enough, but it is if a child suddenly is crossing the road and you’re not paying attention.

If that happens, going more than double the speed limit will make it nearly impossible to stop in time.

That’s why the speed limit is low around playgrounds and schools.

In 2019, I wrote about the local RCMP’s traffic enforcement unit staging a blitz on school and playground zones. In just three hours of enforcement on that day, police nailed 45 reckless drivers.

Five speeding tickets were handed out in the area around Capitol Hill Elementary.

A whopping 40 tickets were handed out at a playground zone on Springer Avenue at Beecher Park.

That stretch of Springer is downhill and people use it as a ratrunner route between Lougheed Highway and Parker Street or Hastings.

People, nothing you are doing is that important to speech through a playground zone. People often forget that it’s not just school zones that are 30 km/h. Kids play around these areas – hence the name “playground.”
