City of Burnaby won't say when Camp Cloud will be evicted

City director says 'We also see the need to act on it sooner rather than later
Camp Cloud morning
A tractor drove by Camp Cloud Monday morning. The camp remained in place despite a court-ordered eviction deadline passing more than 12 hours earlier.

More than 12 hours after the deadline of a court-ordered eviction, Camp Cloud was still standing Monday morning.

A few protesters milled around, as reporters looked on.

The Burnaby RCMP, tasked with enforcing the eviction, was nowhere to be seen.

It remains unclear when the eviction will be enforced. The City of Burnaby’s director of corporate services, Dipak Dattani, said the municipality and local police were cooperatively forming a plan of action.

Asked when the eviction will happen, he said: “I can't go into details, except to say that we are actively working with the RCMP about the next steps … We also see the need to act on it sooner rather than later.”

Ultimately, it is up to the Burnaby RCMP to enforce the eviction order granted by a B.C. Supreme Court Judge on Friday and served to the camp later that day.

Representatives for the detachment did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Dattani said precautions are being made to ensure the eventual eviction goes ahead safely for all involved.

“We continue to ask occupants of Camp Cloud and anyone concerned to act peacefully,” he said. “We are again asking to see if they can leave the site. We will also be looking at how to deal with the dismantling in a very safe way.”

On Sunday, protesters moved a trailer and other items from the corner of Underhill Avenue and Shellmont Street to improve visibility for drivers. Camp Cloud member Xenoa Skinteh said the move was a show of respect to the city and a display of a new willingness to compromise.

It does not appear the move will change the city’s plan to evict the camp.
