A 40-year-old man from Surrey was killed early Wednesday morning on Deltaport Way near Arthur Drive in Ladner following a two-vehicle accident.

A high-friction surface treatment will be applied to a dangerous part of the Highway 1 - Willingdon Avenue off-ramp in Burnaby as part of a provincial roads program.

A total of 14 high-collision locations throughout the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island were identified as needing the treatment to help drivers stop faster - with the goal of reducing rear-end collisions.

The treatment will cover the eastbound section of the Willingdon off-ramp.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure worked with ICBC to identify four interchange off-ramps and 10 intersections.

The treatment will be applied to the roadway by an automated truck-mounted machine using a specialized aggregate and resin to help vehicles come to a full stop more quickly.

The total cost of the program is $3.9 million and the province said in a news release that the hope is it will reduce rising ICBC insurance claim costs. Work will start the first week of September and is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
