Rollover crash
The driver of this Dodge Durango fled the scene after an early morning rollover crash in Burnaby Friday.

The driver in a spectacular early morning rollover crash in Burnaby Friday fled the scene before his lone passenger was rushed to hospital, according to police

Emergency crews were called to Gilmore Avenue and Halifax Street at about 1 a.m., according to assistant fire Chief Stew Colbourne.

Police were first on scene, he said, and were already tending to the female passenger on the ground beside a mangled black Dodge Durango.

The passenger, an 18-year-old Quebec resident, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to a Burnaby RCMP press release.

“The vehicle…had come to a stop after striking two hydro poles, a light standard and a traffic light,” stated the release. “The male driver fled the scene and was located nearby by frontline officers.”

The 31-year-old driver, also from Quebec, was arrested and later released pending further investigation.

Police said both alcohol and speed are suspected to have been factors in the crash.
