A North Burnaby neighbourhood was left in the dark and cold Sunday morning after a driver lost control and crashed their vehicle – taking out a power pole.

A witness told the Burnaby NOW it was a single-vehicle crash. It sheared in half the BC Hydro pole located on Winston Street at Piper Avenue – one of the entrances to Burnaby Lake Regional Park.

This BC Hydro map shows where the power outage covers after a driver took out a power pole Sunday morning.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:20 because that’s when BC Hydro is reporting the power went out to an estimated 50 homes north of Winston on a night when temperatures dropped to about -8 celsius.

BC Hydro crews were still on scene at 8:30 a.m. craning in a new power pole to get the power back on for the neighbourhood.
