Burnaby Hospital’s medicine unit has been closed to admissions because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

Five patients in the unit have tested positive for the virus, according to the Fraser Health Authority, which announced the outbreak Thursday afternoon.

“Fraser Health immediately implemented precautions, including enhanced cleaning, as well as contact tracing to protect the health of all staff, medical staff and patients,” stated a news release.

The emergency department at the hospital remains open, according to Fraser Health, and there has been no impact to any other areas of the local healthcare facility.

"Fraser Health has notified all patients on the affected unit about the outbreak, and, in addition, have informed the families of patients who are unable to share this information," stated the release.

This isn’t the first time an outbreak has been declared at the hospital.

In September, one patient from its inpatient telemetry and cardiac inpatient unit tested positive for COVID-19, and Fraser Health declared an outbreak “out of an abundance of caution” just in case the person had contracted the disease at the hospital.
